Navy Week has sailed into Los Angeles Harbor this week, for the first time since the program launched nationwide five years ago.
“About 90 percent of the commerce that moves between nations goes across the seas. That’s an important mission, one that the people of Los Angeles can appreciate as a maritime city and as a port city,” said Rear Admiral Mike Shoemaker in an interview with ABC 7, Los Angeles.
Highlights include free public ship tours of the four vessels scheduled to be in port at various times during the week: the USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier; the USS Princeton, a cruiser; the USS Chafee, a destroyer; and the USS Champion, a minesweeper.
Other family-friendly events include the Navy Band, “Leap Frog” parachuters and a Navy Simulator.
